Istanbul Airport Overtakes European Hubs in Freight and Passenger Volume Rankings
Official traffic data released by Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE) indicates that Istanbul Airport (iGA) ranked as Europe’s busiest air cargo airport during the first half of 2026, surpassing Frankfurt Airport. The airport handled over one million metric tons of freight during the six-month period, reflecting double-digit percentage growth year-over-year.
The shift in cargo routing patterns has been accelerated by airspace adjustments and supply chain rerouting following geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East. In parallel, the airport maintained its position among Europe's top hubs in terms of commercial passenger traffic, continuing to handle record high daily flight operations.
