Metro Train Derails on Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport Line Leaving Three Injured

A metro train derailed on Istanbul’s Kadıköy-Sabiha Gökçen Airport line on the Asian side of the city during the busy evening hours on Friday, June 19, 2026. According to local authorities, the incident occurred in the Bostancı area at approximately 8:20 p.m. local time due to a switch malfunction.

The derailment led to the immediate evacuation of the train. Passengers exited the carriages onto the tracks and walked through the subway tunnel toward the nearest station under the guidance of emergency personnel. Firefighters, medical teams, and metro maintenance crews were quickly dispatched to the scene. Three individuals sustained injuries during the incident and were subsequently hospitalized. Metro crews and municipal teams have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the technical failure.

Airport Metro Nears Completion as Dubai Flights Resume

Significant advancements in Istanbul's transport infrastructure are underway. Testing has begun on the final section of the Halkalı-Istanbul Airport metro line, which will become Türkiye's longest and fastest underground railway once operational. Concurrently, regional air connectivity is expanding; Turkish Airlines (THY) announced the resumption of direct flights between Istanbul and Dubai, scheduled to relaunch on June 8-9. This move is expected to enhance travel options and trade links between the UAE and Türkiye.
