Allied Lawmakers Gather in Istanbul for 2026 NATO Parliamentary Summit

On June 29, 2026, high-level representatives and speakers from Allied parliaments convened alongside NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska in Istanbul, Türkiye, for the 2026 NATO Parliamentary Summit. The assembly focused heavily on implementing a robust legislative and financial framework ahead of the upcoming NATO Leaders Summit in Ankara.

Key discussions centered on four priority pillars:

  • Defense Investment: Operationalizing the target goal for member nations to invest 5% of their GDP annually in defense and security-related requirements.

  • Transatlantic Production: Expanding and reinforcing the defense technological and industrial base to accelerate manufacturing and delivery timelines.

  • Regional Support: Solidifying long-term resources and continuous defense support pipelines for Ukraine.

  • Enhancing Resilience: Preparing allied infrastructure to deter and defend against evolving global security threats.

During the opening proceedings, NATO PA President Marcos Perestrello emphasized that member nations must establish clear, credible routes toward executing the historic commitments agreed upon during previous allied summits.

"At The Hague Summit last year, NATO leaders agreed to historic commitments. In Ankara next week, they must demonstrate a clear and credible route to implementation." — Marcos Perestrello, NATO PA President
