Istanbul Hosts Inaugural Trilateral Defence Summit Under Mecca Pact
On August 31, 2026, Istanbul hosted the first meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee, bringing together top officials from Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. This assembly marks the first formal trilateral engagement since the signing of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement earlier in the month.
The summit was attended by foreign ministers, defense ministers, and military chiefs of staff from the three participating nations. Among the key figures present was Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, who arrived in Istanbul following diplomatic engagements in the United Kingdom. The committee's primary agenda focused on international security, enhancing collective defense capabilities, improving interoperability among the armed forces, and deepening cooperation in defense industry production. The Mecca Agreement stipulates a collective defense framework intended to strengthen deterrence in the region.
