Sweeping Investigations Unfold: Corruption, Narcotics, and Abuse Allegations in Istanbul

Law enforcement and judicial authorities in Istanbul have advanced several high-profile legal investigations involving municipal figures and public personalities.

In a major anti-corruption operation, police detained Bora Balcıoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul's Silivri district, alongside 17 other individuals. The early morning raids, which included municipal officials and businesspeople, were carried out by the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit (MASAK) as part of a sweeping probe into alleged municipal irregularities.

Simultaneously, judicial actions continued in a celebrity narcotics probe. A Turkish court ruled to jail nine suspects linked to a drug investigation targeting various public figures in Istanbul. Several well-known celebrities were questioned as part of the broader crackdown on narcotics.

Furthermore, Turkey’s interior ministry has opened an official inquiry into serious allegations of police misconduct. A jailed executive from an Istanbul municipality-owned company testified in court that she was subjected to an unlawful strip-search while in police custody. The allegations have prompted a formal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
