President Erdoğan Opens Final Section of 69-Kilometer Istanbul Airport Metro Line

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has officially inaugurated the concluding 22-kilometer section of the Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı metro line. The newly launched extension incorporates five new stations, successfully completing a 69-kilometer fully underground rail ring that services the international airport. The infrastructure project integrates several key metropolitan transit systems, including the Marmaray network, and reduces transit time between the Halkalı railway hub and Istanbul Airport to 30 minutes, aiming to mitigate vehicular traffic congestion across the European side of the city.

Operations on Istanbul's M7 Yıldız–Mahmutbey metro line experienced significant disruptions following a technical issue caused by an increase in underground water flow near a rail switch between the Mecidiyeköy and Çağlayan stations. Metro Istanbul authorities initiated immediate inspections and track repairs. During the maintenance period, officials implemented temporary service adjustments, including alternative transport measures such as free IETT bus transfers between Nurtepe and Mecidiyeköy, to safely accommodate commuters.
