Security Tightens and Protests Erupt Across Turkey Ahead of NATO Summit
Turkish authorities have significantly heightened security measures and clamped down on public assemblies in the run-up to the NATO leaders' summit in Ankara. Reports indicate that over 200 individuals have been detained during security sweeps, including journalists, activists, and a comedian. In tandem with these operations, a blanket ban on demonstrations in Ankara was enacted until July 10, drawing sharp criticism from international bodies like Human Rights Watch, which characterized the actions as a restriction on freedom of expression and assembly. Localized security and social protocols were also heightened, including the refusal to allow a cruise ship carrying LGBTQ+ passengers to dock, with officials citing societal and moral values.
Concurrently, a series of anti-NATO demonstrations organized by leftist groups and the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) occurred across major urban centers. In Istanbul, protesters marched through Taksim Square, Dolmabahçe, and the Kadıköy district, holding signs demanding that Turkey exit the military alliance. While the rallies in Istanbul remained largely orderly despite heavy police presence, protests in Ankara's Kızılay Square led to the detention of more than 100 individuals after riot police intervened with tear gas to disperse the un-authorized gatherings. Anti-summit actions continued through the first day of the conference, featuring public demonstrations and anti-alliance displays.
Amid these escalating security concerns, the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul announced a temporary public closure of its facilities and consular section on Monday, July 6, 2026. Officials stated the closure was implemented out of an abundance of caution, requiring all scheduled public appointments to be pushed back to later dates.
