Metro Stations and Taksim Roads Closed as Istanbul Marks Gezi Protests Anniversary

In observance of the anniversary of the Gezi Park protests, local authorities in Istanbul implemented significant security and crowd-control measures around the city center. Metro İstanbul, the municipal rail transit operator, announced the suspension of services on multiple lines traversing the Taksim Square area. Concurrently, roads leading to Taksim were closed to vehicular traffic. These preventative closures remained in effect until further notice to manage public movement during the anniversary date.

May Day Demonstrations in Istanbul Spark Clashes and Hundreds of Arrests

Violent clashes erupted between Turkish law enforcement and protesters during annual May Day demonstrations in Istanbul. Authorities deployed tear gas and erected metal barricades to disperse the crowds and choke off access to central streets. The police operations specifically targeted groups of trade unionists and activists attempting to march toward Taksim Square, a traditional and historically significant site for protests that had been heavily sealed off by security forces overnight.
