President Erdoğan Opens Final Section of 69-Kilometer Istanbul Airport Metro Line

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has officially inaugurated the concluding 22-kilometer section of the Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı metro line. The newly launched extension incorporates five new stations, successfully completing a 69-kilometer fully underground rail ring that services the international airport. The infrastructure project integrates several key metropolitan transit systems, including the Marmaray network, and reduces transit time between the Halkalı railway hub and Istanbul Airport to 30 minutes, aiming to mitigate vehicular traffic congestion across the European side of the city.

Retrospectives on Istanbul: Urban Expansion Reviews and the Early Days of Online Travel

Retrospectives on Istanbul: Urban Expansion Reviews and the Early Days of Online Travel

Recent publications highlight different facets of Istanbul's rapid technological and urban evolution. In a recent book review featured in The Arts Fuse regarding the text "Power, Progress, and Loss in Erdoğan's Istanbul," critics examine the profound infrastructural changes in the city. The piece highlights a stark contrast in the city's public transit evolution, noting the rapid expansion of subway lines and stations from the time Erdoğan was the city's mayor to the present day.

In tandem with its infrastructural growth, Istanbul also played a role in the early history of the digital travel industry. The Miami Hurricane reports on a University of Miami alumnus, Koksal Abdurrahmanoglu, who began developing the platform "Istanbul.com" in the 1990s. The site was built long before online travel booking became mainstream, eventually growing into a pioneering digital hub for the city's tourism sector.

Türkiye is initiating a broad-based regional incentive program designed to distribute economic and infrastructural weight more evenly across the Marmara region, consequently easing the developmental burden on Istanbul. Coordinated by the Industry and Technology Ministry, the "Local Development Initiative Incentive Program" will target 11 surrounding provinces. In Istanbul specifically, support will shift toward fortifying the entrepreneurship ecosystem through the establishment of large-scale shared service hubs, as well as vertical and smart infrastructure integration.
