Istanbul Heat Index Projected to Reach 40°C as Severe Summer Heatwave Intensifies

A major warm air mass moving across northwestern Türkiye has prompted meteorological alerts in Istanbul, where the heat index is projected to reach up to 40°C (104°F). While actual daytime temperatures are expected to settle around 32°C, elevated regional humidity levels are preventing normal atmospheric cooling. Meteorological experts note that the city's extensive concrete infrastructure has triggered a pronounced "urban heat island" effect, which prevents built-up areas from cooling down effectively at night.

In response to the extreme weather conditions, residents and tourists have flocked to coastal locations, including Karaköy, Salacak, and Eminönü, seeking relief along the Bosphorus. Meanwhile, the real-time prediction platform Polymarket has opened active trading markets tracking the probability of peak temperature thresholds for early July. Public health officials have advised vulnerable populations to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and recommended water conservation measures due to accelerated reservoir evaporation.
