EU Expresses Concern as Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu Faces Multiple Court Hearings
The main defense hearings for the imprisoned Mayor of Istanbul and leading opposition figure, Ekrem İmamoğlu, commenced on July 6, 2026. İmamoğlu, who was initially arrested in March 2025, appeared in court to face three separate criminal proceedings in a single day. European bodies, including the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and members of the European Parliament, are closely monitoring the legal processes. Legal experts and representatives from the CoR noted that the combined charges across the political trials mean İmamoğlu faces a theoretical maximum penalty exceeding 2,000 years in prison.
International observers have cited the case as part of a wider structural decline in Turkish local democracy. According to a joint European legislative statement, approximately 45 democratically elected opposition mayors and municipal officials have been detained, suspended, or systematically pressured since the 2024 local elections. Despite his ongoing imprisonment and legal disputes, İmamoğlu was named the 2026 laureate of the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award, an international recognition celebrating courage and excellence in local governance.
