Istanbul's Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Art Take the Spotlight
Istanbul’s historical and contemporary cultural significance continues to draw global attention, though local landmarks face preservation challenges. The Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in London has announced an upcoming exhibition titled Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires (running from November 7, 2026, to May 9, 2027), which will feature over 200 objects, including mosaics and ceramic tiles representing the city's rich history. In contemporary art, the interdisciplinary project Holding My Drink in the Corner, a collaboration between Berlin-based artist Umut Azad Akkel and Istanbul-based curator Ozan Ünlükoç, has been announced via e-flux. However, conservationists have raised alarms regarding the structural integrity and preservation status of the Hagia Sophia, one of Istanbul's most iconic architectural landmarks, which is currently reported to be in danger due to heavy usage and structural stress.
