Springtime Nature and the Feline-Canine Divide in Istanbul
Istanbul is experiencing the vibrant arrival of spring as millions of tulips bloom across the city's historic parks and groves. Approximately 3,580,000 tulips have been planted in key locations such as Emirgan Grove and Gülhane Park, transforming the cityscape with a seasonal visual feast.
At the same time, the city’s complex relationship with its animal residents remains in focus. Istanbul is globally renowned as the "city of cats," a place where feline residents are deeply woven into everyday urban life and largely protected by locals. However, concerns regarding other street animals have escalated recently. The Istanbul Governor's Office issued a formal warning to local municipalities, urging them to fulfill their statutory obligations regarding the collection and sheltering of stray dogs. The governor's office warned that judicial proceedings would be initiated against municipal administrations that fail to meet these responsibilities by the end of May.
