Istanbul Integrates Historic Preservation with High-Tech Innovation for Water Management
Coinciding with international Earth Day observances on April 22, Istanbul officials highlighted the city's approach to urban water management, which blends historic preservation with advanced technological innovation. Şafak Başa, director general of the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI), emphasized the transformation of older infrastructure—such as the 1883 Terkos pump station, now an ecological education center—into modern assets. Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence and smart monitoring systems has successfully reduced Istanbul's physical water loss from 22 percent to 18 percent in recent years.
