Istanbul Hosts Global Diplomacy: IPU Assembly and Cross-Border Meetings
Istanbul has firmly positioned itself as a critical theater for international diplomacy this week, hosting the 152nd assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)—one of the oldest international organizations in modern history. The assembly facilitated high-level dialogues, including talks between Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko and IPU Chief Saqr Ghobash, where Russia claimed a key role in Middle East peace proposals. On the sidelines and beyond the assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held strategic meetings with visiting dignitaries, including Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to pledge deeper strategic ties, and Tran Thanh Man. Separately, amid global tensions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqhchi addressed the press in Istanbul, confirming that the passage of vessels via the Hormuz Strait remains open during ongoing ceasefire discussions.
