Detained Global Sumud Flotilla Activists Deported to Istanbul
Activists associated with the Global Sumud Flotilla, who were detained by the Israeli military during an attempt to deliver aid to Gaza, have been deported and arrived in Istanbul. The group arrived on May 21 via three Turkish Airlines flights. Among the hundreds of deported individuals are several residents from the San Francisco Bay Area. Upon their arrival in Istanbul, many activists were reunited with their families.

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport will become a “silent airport” on May 10, sharply reducing public announcements inside its terminal to improve passenger comfort and create a calmer travel environment.
Under the new practice, announcements will only be made in emergencies, for critical security alerts or operational necessities. Routine boarding calls and general notices will be removed, with passengers expected to follow flight updates through terminal flight information screens (FIDS), airline mobile apps, SMS and email notifications, the airport’s mobile application and its digital assistant SAVVy.
The renovation of a long-closed Greek Orthodox school on an Istanbul island will be finished in September, although it does not yet have a license to reopen, the patriarchate said on May 10.
Located on Heybeliada, one of the Princes’ Islands, the Halki seminary opened in the mid-19th century and was the main theological school for the Eastern Orthodox Church until it was closed under Turkish law in 1971.
Despite decades of pressure on Ankara to reopen it, led by Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I, the school has remained shut, although earlier this week, he said he was “optimistic” about the possibility of it reopening.
