Russian Tourists Detained and Face Deportation After Reading Bible Inside Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque

A Russian couple is facing deportation from Turkey after being detained inside Istanbul’s historic Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. The individuals were stopped by security and law enforcement officers after they were observed reading the Bible within the premises of the historical site.

The Russian Consulate General in Istanbul is actively managing the situation. Russian diplomats are reportedly in contact with local Turkish authorities to resolve the legal status of the detained citizens. The Hagia Sophia, which was converted from a museum back into a functioning mosque in 2020, maintains specific regulatory guidelines regarding non-Islamic religious practices within its active prayer spaces.
